The number two court of the Instruction Division of the Court of First Instance of Arrecife has opened a criminal investigation for the fire that the Zonzamas landfill suffered just two years ago, on May 27, 2024. Within the framework of this judicial investigation, the Councilor for Waste of the Cabildo de Lanzarote, Domingo Cejas (Coalición Canaria), appears as an investigated party for being the legal representative of the environmental complex.
The investigation was initiated after Deprona Timanfaya, the Nature Protection Service (Seprona) of the Civil Guard in Lanzarote, filed a complaint for the possible commission of a crime against natural resources and the environment, as stipulated in article 325 of the Penal Code.
According to documentation accessed by *La Voz*, there were two environmental reports that had already alerted in 2022 and another in the same year as the fire, in 2024, to "operational and internal control deficiencies" in the management of resources, storage, classification, and surveillance.
The investigation points to possible "administrative, criminal, and reputational" consequences for Domingo Cejas and for the administration itself.
Thus, the Court has asked the insular representative to appoint a lawyer "of his trust" to represent him in this criminal investigation. In this case, the lawyer Francisco Torres Stinga will be in charge of the legal assistance for Domingo Cejas.
