The First Section of the Provincial Court of Las Palmas will try a man in Gran Canaria next Thursday accused of running a small boat that arrived in Lanzarote on August 21, 2022.

The Prosecutor's Office's indictment argues that the accused allegedly reached an agreement with "other unidentified people" to charge "various amounts" of money to migrants in exchange for transferring them to the Canary coasts.

All this, "knowing that they were violating the rules on entry into the national territory" and that, upon reaching the country, they would be in an irregular situation.

This precarious vessel left Morocco, arriving in Lanzarote on August 21 at around 10:40 a.m. Meanwhile, the Public Ministry argues that the accused was in charge of navigating the small boat in which forty people were traveling.

The boat, as usual, "lacked any maritime safety system, such as life jackets."

The Public Ministry requests eight years in prison for the accused, special disqualification for the right to passive suffrage during the term of the sentence and payment of costs for a crime against the rights of foreign citizens. Meanwhile, he has been in prison since August 25, 2022.
