The Sixth Section of the Provincial Court has sentenced this Monday four people accused of a crime against the rights of foreign citizens and another against public health for transporting cannabis in a boat that arrived in Lanzarote in May 2021.
As they confessed in the hearing held this Monday in Arrecife, Mamou Idaf and Yousef Madou charged "various" amounts of money to 32 migrants to transfer them by boat to the Canary coasts, acting with other people who have not been identified. The precarious vessel departed from Morocco and arrived in Lanzarote on May 1, 2021, with all its occupants in good health.
Mamou Idaf captained the boat from the time it left the Alawi city of Agadir until it arrived on the island. Meanwhile, Yousef Madou helped him in these tasks, alternating in shifts.
Thus, the also convicted Moussa and Ismael, with the knowledge of the previous Mamou and Yousef, transported in that same boat ten bundles of cannabis resins, with a total of 238.250 kilograms of hashish. This drug was introduced in order to market it within the island. In the illicit market, the seized substance would have amounted to 477,122 euros in the market.
At this point, after reaching an agreement between their defenses and the Public Prosecutor's Office, the boat's captains Mamou and Yousef have agreed to serve three years and one day in prison for a crime against the rights of foreign citizens, with the corresponding disqualification of the right to passive suffrage, as well as one year, six months and one day in prison for a crime against public health as accomplices. In addition, they must pay 238,600 euros or assume two more months in prison if they cannot afford the fine.
Meanwhile, Moussa and Ismael will have to serve three years and one day in prison, disqualification of the right to passive suffrage during the term of the sentence and the payment of a fine of 477,122 euros for a crime against public health by trying to introduce the drug in Lanzarote.
The defendants, who remained in jail awaiting trial, will be compensated for the time they have been in prison. The Prosecutor's Office has also requested the destruction of the drug.
