A witness recounts how the defendant accused of trying to kill his baby threw him to the ground as if he were "about to burst a melon"

The trial, in which the young man has defended that "he got nervous" and that he threw the child to his mother-in-law because she had asked him to, but not with the intention of killing him, has been adjourned for sentencing.

A Civil Guard officer has stated this Monday before the Las Palmas Court that the 22-year-old accused of trying to murder his 16-month-old baby two years ago at the Lanzarote airport threw him to the ground "with all the force in the world", as if he was "about to burst a melon".

The accused, Rafael L.D., "stepped back, climbed onto a step, gained momentum and threw the child", explained this officer, who, according to the EFE agency, has stated that the "impact was astonishing" and that he was the one who helped the child, who was unconscious and unresponsive, so he blew air into him and the child began to cry, who was hospitalized for six days and took 20 days to recover from his injuries.

The baby's mother, his maternal grandmother and other witnesses - including three other civil guards - have also stated that the defendant threw the child with "rage" and force, who fell next to the baggage claim belt, contrary to the version offered by the defendant, who has maintained that he got nervous and threw it to his former mother-in-law when she asked him to, but not with the intention of killing him: "I would never hurt my son."

The Civil Guard officers have indicated that there was a great commotion at the airport and that they had to take the detainee away because they feared for the situation that was created, since there were passengers who began to kick the defendant while they had him held on the ground.

The accused, who had a restraining order from his ex-partner for a crime of injury, has also denied having threatened her and the baby with death and having coerced her, as well as throwing her to the ground and kicking her that day at the airport.

The events, according to the prosecution, occurred when the accused and the baby's mother arrived from Seville in the company of another couple who traveled with them because they feared that the accused would harm his friend and the child, since they had lived together for several days in his house in Villamartín (Cádiz) and witnessed the threats and coercion of the defendant towards his former sentimental partner and the child.

The prosecutor and the prosecution have stressed that it was an "ordeal" and a "nightmare" what the baby's mother suffered, who went on vacation for a few days and found the accused at the door of her friends' house and he did not separate from her until they returned to Lanzarote, where he forced her to return earlier than planned and also to buy him a ticket to travel with her and the child.

According to witnesses, the accused threatened those days - from October 16 to 20 - to kill the mother and the baby and to harm the entire family and even took money, wallet and mobile phone from his ex-partner, from which he deleted contacts and messages, as she and her friend have stated, although the defendant has denied everything.
