The Maritime-Fisheries Training Institute (IFMP) of the Canary Islands, Lanzarote Fishing School, has implemented the Environmental Management System (EMS) in accordance with the ISO 14001:2015 standard, a decisive step that consolidates its model of a sustainable center.
Among the measures associated with this implementation, the creation of a collection point for hazardous waste at the center's facilities stands out, where oils, paints, contaminated mops, oily waters, and other waste generated during training activities are safely stored and managed.
The certification is added to other actions that the center already had in place. Both the school and the student residence operate with photovoltaic energy, and last year, filtered tap water dispensers were installed at various points in the complex, eliminating the dependence on bottled water.
In the same vein, and as an action directly linked to the EMS and the environmental education program aimed at the entire educational community, the center has given all its students personalized refillable stainless steel bottles. The initiative seeks to reduce non-contaminated plastic waste in daily life and involve students, teachers, and staff in the environmental culture that already defines the center.
With these measures, the Lanzarote Fishing School consolidates its position as a benchmark in sustainability within maritime-fisheries training in the Canary Islands.
