Only 29% of the 1120 applications sent from Lanzarote to the Government of the Canary Islands to receive a university scholarship last year were approved, according to the Statistical Yearbook of Scholarships of the Canarian Executive.
The proportion is only lower in Fuerteventura, which only saw 28.9% of its applications approved last year. The highest percentages were in La Palma (33.9%) and Tenerife (35.3%).
By sex, 62.7% of the Lanzarote applications to receive one of the university scholarships from the Government of the Canary Islands last year, which amounted to 1,120, were submitted by women.
The report also reflects that San Bartolomé is the municipality from which the most scholarships were requested with respect to its population, although 38% were sent from Arrecife of the total. If San Bartolomé represents 12.2% of the population, it sent 17.5% of the applications.
Also Teguise (20.1% of applications) and Tinajo (5.4%) had a percentage of candidates above their population. From the rest of the municipalities, a percentage of applications below their population weight was sent.
Almost half of the applications submitted from Lanzarote, specifically 517, were to study outside the archipelago. Next, the Government of the Canary Islands received 361 applications to study in La Laguna and 242 for the University of Las Palmas.
