The Minister of Tourism and Employment of the Canary Islands Government, Jéssica de León, presented this Tuesday the report ‘Distribution and concentration of tourist accommodation in the Canary Islands’, prepared by the Tourism Observatory together with researchers from the CajaCanarias-Ashotel Chair of the University of La Laguna (ULL).

The report shows great differences between the different municipalities of the Canary Islands and a great concentration in very specific points of Lanzarote. The average for the archipelago is 8 vacation home places per 100 inhabitants, while in the Lanzarote municipality of Yaiza, which has the most vacation homes per 100 inhabitants, there are 62

The municipalities of Haría, with 38 places per 100 inhabitants, and Tías, with 35, occupy the fifth and sixth positions among the municipalities with the most vacation home places per capita.

On the other hand, at the island level, Lanzarote, together with Fuerteventura, has the smallest percentage of tourist accommodation in the form of vacation homes, compared to hotels and conventional tourist apartments.

De León, who was accompanied by the Deputy Minister of Tourism, José Manuel Sanabria, and the professor from the ULL Raúl Hernández, one of the co-authors of the report, highlighted that “vacation home places in the Canary Islands represent 36% of the total accommodation offer, compared to 18% of traditional apartments, while hotels amount to 46%”.

The report  states that the Canary Islands has 545,344 tourist accommodation places, of which 251,308 are hotel places; 195,994 are vacation home places and 98,042 correspond to traditional apartments.

According to the report presented, in December 2023 there were 200,000 vacation home beds in the Canary Islands. The figures recorded in October of last year indicated the existence of 28,560 owners, of which 71% were individuals and 28% were legal entities.

In addition, 50% of the vacation home places correspond to 79% of owners who have only one property, while the other half are owners who allocate two or more homes to this use.
