Tourists spent less this July than the same month last year in the Canary Islands

The number of foreign tourists arriving in the Canary Islands slightly decreased in July compared to the same month last year, by 0.67%, standing at 1,222,895, according to data published this Tuesday by the National Statistics Institute (INE).

To a greater extent, the expenditure made on the islands decreased from July to July, specifically by 1.3%, overall, by foreign visitors who passed through them, which amounted to 2,188 million euros, according to the figures from the latest Tourism Expenditure Survey prepared by the INE.

In all of Spain, on the contrary, the income generated by foreigners who chose the country as their holiday destination not only did not decrease, but grew compared to a year ago by 10.9%, reaching 18,218 million euros, reveals said statistic.

The drop in income recorded in the Canary Islands was determined, in addition to the decrease in the number of foreign tourists, by a reduction in the average stay of each of them, which was 7.9% lower than in the same month of 2025, standing at 7.6 nights.

The average expenditure of each visitor from outside the country in July was, therefore, on the islands, 0.7% lower than a year earlier, standing at 1,790 euros.

And this despite the fact that the average daily expenditure per foreign tourist in the archipelago rose from July to July and significantly, by 7.8%, to reach 236 euros, the INE specifies.

Which, in its Border Tourist Movement Statistics, published in parallel to the expenditure survey, reveals that, once the July data were accounted for, in the first seven months of 2026 the Canary Islands received 0.57% fewer foreign visitors than in the same period of the previous year, their number being 9,020,424.
