The company Boatbooker, a platform to discover and book unforgettable boat trips, has published its list of the ten spookiest sailing destinations in Europe for 2025 and the Epave Telamon ship, in Lanzarote, has been chosen as one of the most chilling.
Known on the island simply as El Telamón, the remains of that ship that ran aground on October 31, 1981, the eve of All Saints' Day, and which transported logs from Ivory Coast to the Greek port of Thessaloniki, have become, in their own way, another tourist destination in Lanzarote, especially for those looking for places different from those most visited by tourists.
The Epave Telamon, whose remains are in the waters of Las Caletas, between Arrecife and Costa Teguise, “has become a skeletal and rusty silhouette against the waves of the Atlantic”, Boatbooker highlights.
“Its exposed position leaves it vulnerable to strong currents and storms, and sailors often report the creaking of the metal moving in the waves, which increases its disturbing aura”, they explain.
Beyond its visual impact, Boatbooker believes that the shipwreck “represents the dangers of sailing in the open sea and the lives of those who sailed these waters.”
“The shallow reefs and sudden swells amplify the feeling of isolation for those who explore it by boat. All these elements —history, dramatic coastal landscapes and the ghostly appearance of the deteriorated hull— create an atmospheric experience that is both exciting and slightly disturbing”, they conclude.
The list is completed by Loch Ness in Scotland, the shipwreck of the Evangelia in Romania, the island of Poveglia in Venice, the shipwreck of the Sheraton in England, the Irish lake Lough Derg, the Norwegian fjord known as The Devil's Crack in Norway, which has one more place on the list, a German warship from the Second World War stranded in another fjord in the Nordic country.
In addition, despite not having a physical place of reference, the list includes the legend of the flying Dutchman endlessly sailing the waters of the North Sea.
