The owner of the premises that offered on the Airbnb platform a "shared room", which in reality were tents at 25 euros a night, and that did not meet any type of tourist accommodation requirements or license, faces a serious sanction of between 30,001 euros and 300,000 euros.
“The sanctioning procedure of the Tourism Inspection has already begun”, sources from the Ministry of Tourism have confirmed to La Voz, and contemplates “a serious sanction of up to 300,000 euros”.
The Ministry explained that the case of Arrecife will be easier to resolve than others in the Canary Islands, such as the one recently reported in Tenerife, where tents were rented on a roof terrace, thanks to the report that the local police of the capital of Lanzarote drew up and sent to the Tourism Inspection.
At the request of the mayor of the city, the Local Police inspected the premises on January 16 and confirmed the existence of "multiple campaign houses, shared bathrooms and toilets, and their probable use as accommodation establishment".
The police report also stated that the “aforementioned premises did not exhibit or provide, as determined by the Canary Islands regulations, its corresponding plates and authorization number”.
This information has made it easier for the Tourism Inspection to start the sanctioning procedure a few weeks after the case was discovered.
