Timanfaya National Park celebrates its fiftieth anniversary with a calendar full of free events during the coming months.

The Minister of Ecological Transition and Energy of the Government of the Canary Islands, Mariano H. Zapata, visited the Mancha Blanca Visitors and Interpretation Center (Lanzarote), headquarters of the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Timanfaya National Park.

Precisely there, from this Monday, January 13 to Thursday the 16th, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., the Visitors Center will host the Interpretation Days, a meeting that will bring together experts in the interpretation of natural and cultural heritage and that is aimed at all citizens.

The area's councillor pointed out that these celebrations are "serving to increase citizens' interest in the work that the Timanfaya National Park has launched in recent years," of which, he also detailed, "last year 2024 received the visit of more than 262,000 people."

The capacity for the January conferences is limited, so it is advisable to reserve a place through the registration form.

During his visit, Zapata also recalled that "Timanfaya, the only eminently geological national park in Spain and a world reference lava field, is now celebrating half a century of conservation work with a program of activities that began in September 2024 and will extend until August 2025."

"Encouraging curiosity" for Timanfaya

"Encouraging curiosity, sensitivity and respect for this natural environment is the priority of this 50th anniversary of Timanfaya," explained Pascual Gil, director-conservator of the Timanfaya National Park.

"We are working on the creation of informative materials that create social awareness and promote the values of park protection," recalled today the person responsible for the management of the Lanzarote park, before which he also highlighted that "the topics that have so far structured the conferences held have achieved great impact and public attendance, helping the population to make this natural space their own, connecting with it in a closer way."

Speakers of the January conferences

The Professor of Environmental Education at the University of Chichester, Duncan Reavey, author of books on environmental change and founder of the Forest School, a model of learning about the natural environment through self-discovery, will speak.

The rest of the speakers will be guide-interpreters from Canary Islands national parks who will share their knowledge of the ecosystem where they work and the methodology they work to disseminate its values: we will have the presence of Jacinto Leralta (Garajonay National Park), Ana Ferraz and Ana León (Caldera de Taburiente National Park) and Cristina Bernar (Timanfaya National Park).
