Overnight stays in tourist apartments increase in Lanzarote, while they fall in the Canary Islands

The overnight stays in tourist apartments grew by 5% in Lanzarote in July compared to the previous year, going from 603,079 last year to a total of 632,764 tourists last July, according to data published this Monday by the National Statistics Institute (INE).

The average stay in Lanzarote among those who stayed in tourist apartments reached 7.51 days, the longest stay among the Canary Islands, followed by Gran Canaria (7.11) and Fuerteventura (6.89). 

In contrast, in the Canary Islands as a whole, they fell by 2.47% in July compared to the same month in 2025 in the Canary Islands, going from 2,597,815 to 2,533,534, with a total of 64,281 fewer. 

This decrease was determined by the reduction in overnight stays accumulated by foreign visitors, from 2,156,173 to 1,957,281, which could not compensate for the increase that, on the other hand, occurred in the number of those accumulated by residents in Spain, which grew from July to July, going from 441,642 to 576,253, according to the latest Survey of occupation in non-hotel tourist accommodation prepared by the INE.

Which reveals that the drop compared to a year ago was fundamentally due to a decrease in the number of travelers who, overall, stayed in the archipelago's tourist apartments, from 367,321 to 362,440, although a slight reduction in the average stay of each of them also contributed to it, albeit to a lesser extent, which varied from 7.07 to 6.99 nights.

The protagonists of this setback were foreign clients, whose volume stood at 245,898, compared to 273,952 in July 2025, contrary to what happened with residents in Spain, who increased, from 93,369 to 116,542.

The occupancy rate of said accommodations also decreased, from 61.56% to 58.67% of its places, although a July-to-July increase in the number of operational apartments on the islands also contributed to this, from 40,755 to 41,818, the INE details.

The volume of personnel employed by the sector, however, experienced an increase, reaching 12,959 employees in July 2026, when in the same month of the previous year there were 12,611.
