The THB Flora hotel joined the Tías City Council's program this month to increase the selective collection of organic matter (biowaste) through the brown container. Currently, a total of 44 brown containers have been installed in various hotel and non-hotel establishments in Puerto del Carmen.
The mayor of Tías, José Juan Cruz, explains that the Tías City Council continues to take firm steps towards a more sustainable waste management model with the progressive implementation of this selective collection of biowaste, "a key measure to promote the circular economy in the municipality."
The Councilor for the Environment, Carmen Gloria Rodríguez, points out that "the service is in the phase focused on hotel establishments, which generate a significant amount of organic waste and whose collaboration is strategic to guarantee the success of the system."
Among the latest to join is THB Flora, which has adapted its facilities to facilitate the correct separation of waste by staff. The hotel director, Mauricio Fichera, received the councilor these days, showing the company's involvement as an example of good practices that reinforces the tourism sector's commitment to local sustainability.
The implementation of this system in the municipality also has the support and collaboration of the Lanzarote Tourism Federation (FTL), an entity that has facilitated dialogue with the sector and has shown its support from the first moment for an initiative aligned with the objectives of sustainability and tourism quality of the island.
"The commitment of the FTL Tourism Federation to sustainability is firm and for this we are working with companies in all areas: waste management, fifth container, decarbonization, energy efficiency, circular economy, among other aspects," says the president of the entity, Susana Pérez.
The Tías City Council, through the Department of the Environment and in collaboration with FCC Medio Ambiente, has initiated a support work with the hotels in the municipality, providing specific containers, informative material and training sessions to the staff to guarantee a correct separation at source.
The 44 brown containers are installed in the following accommodation establishments: Beatriz Playa, Costa Sal, Sol Lanzarote, Lava Beach, Aequora Lanzarote, Los Jameos Playa, Floresta, La Geria, Riu Paraíso, Lanzarote Village, Hyde Park Lane, Las Costas, San Antonio, Relaxia Olivina, Aqua Suite, Fariones, Casas Heddy, La Isla y el Mar, Costa Mar, Morromar, Puerto Carmen, 5 Plazas, Plus Fariones and Gloria Ízaro. They are also placed in Rancho Texas and in the Hispano Británico school.
Separating organic matter allows it to be transformed into resources, generating compost or biogas, and contributing to the reduction of emissions and a more efficient use of natural resources. This measure also responds to the commitments established by state and European legislation on waste.
Next step: restaurants
Soon, the system will be extended to the restaurant sector, with the aim of continuing to incorporate large waste generators. The final phase will be the progressive implementation in the whole of the citizenship, thus completing a municipal system of selective collection of biowaste that allows to improve efficiency in management and advance towards a cleaner and more sustainable municipality.
"This project is a key piece of our sustainability strategy. We are committed to a more responsible management of waste, which involves all sectors and contributes to improving our environment," adds Carmen Gloria Rodríguez.
The City Council appreciates the collaboration of the hotel establishments that have already joined, as well as the support of the Lanzarote Tourism Federation.
