Lanzarote has positioned itself at the center of the young tourism phenomenon this summer. Driven by its landscape and its enormous visual appeal on social media, the island has seen a surge in bookings from the Spanish Generation Z with an increase of 317% compared to last summer.
Thus, it becomes the Canary Islands destination with the highest growth and one of the main drivers of the national travel boom.
The data comes from Kiwi.com, an online travel agency (OTA) and metasearch engine specializing in finding cheap flights by combining routes from airlines that do not normally operate together or have code-sharing agreements.
Generation Z's (young people between 18 and 27 years old) taste for aesthetics and visual impact on social media has benefited Lanzarote due to its photogenicity. Young people seek images of the volcanic landscapes, sunsets in Timanfaya, or the island's white architecture that dominate their TikTok and Instagram feeds.
In fact, the boom in peninsular tourism this summer in Lanzarote has been largely thanks to young people, who now represent 42.7% of total bookings issued from Spain.
The study confirms that this has partly been due to a 9% decrease in the cost of tickets to Lanzarote compared to last year, with the average price around 147 euros.
Only bookings from Generation Z, which also shows a particular taste for the islands, increased more this summer, to Ibiza (+422%), Menorca (+363%), and Palma de Mallorca with 327%.
Lanzarote is just below with 317% growth, comfortably surpassing other major peninsular destinations such as Seville, which registered an increase of 258%.
The figures also reveal that Spanish youth are leading global tourism activity with a 163% increase in their bookings, far exceeding the international average (+77%).
Spanish Generation Z makes bookings practically on the fly. The planning window is reduced to only 35 days in advance, a figure that demonstrates a firm commitment to flexibility and spontaneity when organizing their getaways.
