Lanzarote, the island most in favor of introducing a tourist tax

More than half of the residents of Lanzarote agree with its introduction, while 21% are against it

51.8% of Lanzarote residents are in favor of the introduction of a tourist tax, according to the latest Survey of Socioeconomic Habits and Confidence (ECOSOC) published by the Canary Islands Institute of Statistics (ISTAC).

A tourist tax is an additional charge applied to visitors during their stay in a tourist destination. The implementation and use of this tax may vary depending on local policies and the specific needs of each destination.

In contrast, 21.8% of those surveyed in Lanzarote were against the introduction of such a tax. 23.9% stated they were unsure, and 2.5% did not know how to answer.

Lanzarote is the most favorable island in the archipelago for the introduction of the tax. The percentage of Lanzarote residents in favor of a tourist tax is 7.5 points higher than the Canary Islands average, where 43.3% are in favor and 24% are against.

The second island with the most people in favor of its introduction is Tenerife, where 49% were in favor. It is interesting to note that in the metropolitan area of Tenerife, the percentage in favor of the tax rises to 54.3%.

Next is La Gomera (48.4%), followed by Fuerteventura, where the people in favor of the tax reached 43.3%, Gran Canaria 35.8%, in La Palma they were 33.7%, and in El Hierro 30.7%.

In all the islands, there are more people in favor than against, except in El Hierro, where the result is identical for both opinions. The highest percentages of people against the tax are found in Gran Canaria (30.2%) and El Hierro (30.7%).
