Lanzarote's tourist apartments, the most desired in the country in December

The Canary Islands led in 2023 in overnight stays in tourist apartments with 25.1 million, 4.2% more than the previous year

The Canary Islands led in 2023 in overnight stays in tourist apartments registered in Spain, concentrating 25.1 million, which represented an interannual increase of 4.2%, according to data published this Thursday by the INE.

By tourist areas, the island of Tenerife was the preferred destination, with 783 thousand overnight stays. Lanzarote presented the highest occupancy rate per apartment, at 85.2%. The tourist spots with the highest number of overnight stays were San Bartolomé de Tirajana, Arona and Mogán.

The tourist apartments in this study are properties designed for tourist rental according to the INE, so it does not include vacation homes, which are of residential origin.

At the national level, overnight stays in non-hotel accommodations (apartments, campsites, rural houses and hostels) totaled 137 million in 2023, a record figure that exceeds the previous year's by 4.4% and 4.8% that of 2019, before covid.

According to data published this Thursday by the National Institute of Statistics (INE), last year the prices of apartments rose by an average of 8.3%; those of campsites, 5.4%, and those of rural tourism accommodation, 4.9%.

In December alone, 7 million lodgings were registered in this type of establishment, 9.8% more than in that month last year, with better evolution of those of non-residents (10.5%) than among residents (8.6%).
