In May, 222,993 foreign tourists arrived in Lanzarote, 4.1% more than in the same month last year, according to the Lanzarote data center based on figures from the Canary Islands Institute of Statistics (ISTAC) and FRONTUR-Canarias.
However, growth was not uniform among the different nationalities. British tourism grew by 5.7% in May, reaching a total of 131,521 tourists, which is equivalent to almost 60% of the total.
In proportion, with 20,668 arrivals, the tourism that has grown the most in the last year has been French tourism. In May alone, the number of travelers from France increased by 24% compared to the same month last year.
The biggest decrease was experienced by tourism from Italy, which, with 5,697 arrivals, fell by 26% in May compared to last year. The sharp drop in Italian tourism is partly explained by a decrease in air capacity with Italy of around 30%.
The rest of the nationalities have similar figures to last year. Slightly lower in the case of Ireland, with 28,179 arrivals, and somewhat higher in the case of travelers from Belgium (5,421), the Netherlands (6,406), the Nordic countries (1,885) and the rest of the world (8,428).
