Average spending per tourist stagnates in the Canary Islands

Overall spending grows, but not due to individual spending, but due to an increase in the number of arrivals, in March alone they were 18.9% more than the same month last year

The average spending per tourist in the Canary Islands stood at 1,507 euros in March, which is equivalent to an anemic growth of 1.6% compared to what was spent in the same month last year, according to data published this Friday by the National Institute of Statistics (INE).

However, given that the number of foreign tourists arriving in the Canary Islands rose by 18.9% in March compared to the same month of 2023, reaching 1,543,234, it increased the total spending by all of them by 20.9%, to 2,325 million euros.

In the accumulated of the first three months of 2024, the number of foreign visitors arriving to the archipelago was 4,272,290, 14.3% more than a year ago, reports the INE, which highlights that, within the scope of the entire country, the Canary Islands were its first destination in March, accounting for 24.3% of the total, followed by Catalonia (21.2%) and Andalusia (15.1%).

In the whole of Spain, 6.3 million international tourists were received in March, 21% more than a year earlier, and in the first three months of 2024 16.1 million, 17.7% more, according to its latest Tourist Movement Statistics at Borders, Frontur.

And its corresponding Tourist Spending Survey, Egatur, reveals that their spending in the third month of the year grew proportionally to a greater extent than in the islands, 29.7% and reached 8,652 million euros.
