The Canary Islands Vacation Rental Association (ASCAV) has sent a letter to the President of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, to request a meeting in which to convey their concern about the situation in which the sector finds itself

“As you well know, the VV (Vacation Rental) Bill is currently in Parliament and is being processed urgently, which has private owners, thousands of Canarian and resident families, as well as hundreds of self-employed and local companies that are dedicated to the intermediation of these homes, in a state of constant anxiety,” the letter begins.

“We represent thousands of Canarian families and hundreds of self-employed and companies that are dedicated to vacation rentals in the Archipelago. A sector that constitutes the democratization of tourism and whose collaborative, transversal economy represents 3% of the Canarian GDP,” they explain.

ASCAV emphasizes that “society is demonstrating for a change of model that makes Canarians participate in the benefits of the sector, which we make possible.”

“Not only for the benefit it gives to the owners and managers of vacation rentals, but to society as a whole through the IGIC and IRPF. In addition to having contributed to the creation and growth of a multitude of companies in sectors that provide us with services,” they complete.

“Mr. President, you also govern for us and you must take our sensitivities into account. Don't make us executioners of a housing emergency situation created by a multitude of factors, but mainly by a lack of government planning.”

ASCAV warns that “investments of thousands of private owners are at stake who see their income in danger, which in many cases represents the only livelihood of many families and for others, a vital complement to cover expenses or simply to live a little better.”

It also points out that “the illusion, the investment and the work of hundreds of companies born in the heat of vacation rentals are also at stake, which are currently providing us with services and which have meant an opportunity for the future for many young people. Not to mention the workers who see their jobs in danger with this Law, which if approved, would end 90% of the activity.”

ASCAV again requests “a temporary and limited suspension of registrations of vacation rentals, so that the vacation rentals of private owners are consolidated so that they can continue to generate wealth for all Canarians."
