Renting in the Canary Islands is now more expensive than in the Basque Country, where they earn almost 10,000 euros more per year

Only Madrid, the Balearic Islands and Catalonia have higher rents than those in the Canary Islands

The most common gross salary in the Canary Islands amounts to 24,033 euros per year, almost 10,000 euros below what is earned in the Basque Country, where it amounts to 33,504, according to data from the National Institute of Statistics (INE).

Despite this, rental prices in the Canary Islands have been above those registered in the Basque Country for five consecutive months.

Currently, the average price in the Canary Islands amounts to 15 euros per square meter, while in the Basque Country it is 14.9 euros.

In the last year, rental prices have risen by 7.4% in the Canary Islands, while they increased by 5.8% in the Cantabrian community.

At the national level, where the gross salary amounts to 28,049 euros, the month of August has closed with a year-on-year increase in rental prices of 10.5%, reaching 14.5 euros per square meter, according to data from idealista.com.

The fact is that rents have risen in all Spanish regions since August of last year, except in the case of Extremadura, where landlords ask 0.1% less for their homes. Castilla-La Mancha leads the increases (13.5%), followed by the Community of Madrid (12.3%), Andalusia (12%) and La Rioja (11.5%).

Below the national average are the increases in Comunitat Valenciana (9.6%), Aragon (9.5%), Castilla y León (9.1%), Asturias (9%), Catalonia (8.7%), Galicia (7.6%) and the Canary Islands (7.4%).

The smallest increases in the last year occurred in the Balearic Islands (4.9%), the Region of Murcia (5.7%), the Basque Country (5.8%), Cantabria (5.9%) and Navarra (6.1%).

The Community of Madrid (20.5 euros) and the Balearic Islands (19.4 euros) are the regions with the most expensive price. They are followed by Catalonia (18.5 euros), the Canary Islands (15 euros) and the Basque Country (14.9 euros).
