Land for 126 affordable rental homes

The Ministry of Public Works, Transport and Housing of the Government of the Canary Islands published this Thursday the cooperation agreement between the Canary Housing Institute (ICAVI) and the Yaiza City Council to freely transfer a plot of land on which the Canary Executive will build 126 protected homes for affordable rent. This can already be read in the Official Gazette of the Canary Islands (BOC).

This action is included in the programs of the Recovery and Resilience Mechanism (MRR) of the European Union. The Area led by the acting councilor Sebastián Franquis reports that the plot of land that has been transferred by the Yaiza City Council is located in the area known as Montaña Roja, adjacent to Faro Pechiguera Avenue, and has an area of 45,253 square meters.

Following this agreement published this Thursday with Yaiza, the ICAVI also has the commitment of the Lanzarote Council for the free transfer of another plot of land on Triana Street in Arrecife, to build another 46 homes for affordable rent and energy efficient within the MRR and which are financed in part with ICAVI's own funds and in part with EU Next Generation funds. Therefore, in the coming months the ICAVI will be able to tender 172 new protected homes for affordable rent on the island of Lanzarote thanks to the MRR and Next Generation funds.

To this we must add the 201 new protected homes included in the Canary Islands Housing Plan 2020-2025 that the Government will build in the coming months in the Maneje neighborhood, in Arrecife. In fact, "three companies have already submitted bids for the construction of the first batch of 134 of these 201 homes," reports the Government of the Canary Islands. It should be remembered that the Maneje homes will be the first protected homes built by the Government of the Canary Islands in Lanzarote in 27 years.

The agreement for the construction of new homes in Yaiza and Arrecife is part of the interventions of the so-called Line 6 of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, a program designed for the construction of energy-efficient buildings that will be offered to families at an affordable rent. With the funds from this line, which are provided by the EU, the ICAVI and other administrations such as island councils and city councils, the construction of 1,053 protected homes in fifteen municipalities is planned.

This line of action will be executed both by the Ministry of Public Works, Transport and Housing through the ICAVI, and by the Cabildo de Gran Canaria and the City Councils of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and La Laguna. This is the first time that homes with these characteristics have been incorporated into the public housing stock of the Canary Islands.
