The rise of vacation homes is not finding a ceiling in Lanzarote. As of Wednesday, May 21, the island had 10,157 registered vacation homes. Only behind the capital cities of Tenerife (29,119) and Gran Canaria (16,591), which surpass the island of volcanoes by just over 6,000 licenses, although it has 700,400 more inhabitants. This is according to data from the General Tourist Registry of the Canary Islands Government analyzed by La Voz.
The pressure of vacation homes on the total number registered in Lanzarote continues to grow. In total, the island has 79,092 conventional family homes registered, according to the 2021 Census of the National Institute of Statistics (INE), the most up-to-date to date. So, if we cross-reference the data with those registered in the vacation market, 12.8% of the available homes on the island are already destined for tourist rentals.
By municipalities, Yaiza has nearly three out of ten (27.7%) homes destined for tourist rentals, as it has 10,360 homes registered and 2,871 vacation homes. The southern town is the one suffering the most aggravated situation on the island. In addition, the tourist properties in the south of the island are more focused on coastal areas, such as Playa Blanca, although this reality is increasingly spreading throughout all the towns in the municipality.
In second position, Teguise has nearly two out of ten homes in the vacation market. Of the 11,186 homes registered in 2021, 2,032 are already being rented as tourist accommodations. Thus, in third position, Tías, Haría, and Tinajo have more than one in ten homes (15%, 14.4%, and 12.5%, respectively) in the tourist market; San Bartolomé almost one in ten (6.4%); the capital of the island, the municipality with the most homes registered, has 4% of the homes already in the tourist market. Specifically, Arrecife has 1,127 vacation homes and 25,339 registered homes.
