The number of mortgages signed in January in the Canary Islands, increased by 26.7%, compared to the same month of 2022, totaling 1,424 operations, which also represents more than 49% over the month of December, according to data released this Monday by the National Institute of Statistics (INE).
The capital lent has also grown by 21.6% and exceeds 151 million euros in January compared to January 2022.
In contrast, in Spain as a whole, growth has been very small, since the number of mortgages constituted on homes increased by 2.9% last January compared to the same month of 2022, totaling 37,435 loans. Despite everything, this is the highest figure in a month of January since 2020, when more than 40,200 mortgages were signed.
The annual growth in the number of mortgages among the autonomous communities has only been higher than in the Canary Islands in Navarra, where the signing of mortgages grew by 31.2%. On the other side of the table, Aragón (-31.8%), La Rioja (-23.3%) and Asturias (-18.8%) experienced sharp declines.
With the year-on-year increase in January, the signing of mortgages on homes returns to positive rates after registering a year-on-year decrease of 8.8% in December 2022 after 21 months of consecutive year-on-year increases.
