Lanzarote is about to reach 10,000 vacation homes. According to data provided by the Tourism Department of the Government of the Canary Islands, the island already has, as of this Monday, March 17, 9,873 houses or apartments for tourist use and registered in the General Tourism Registry, an essential requirement to carry out the activity in the Canary Islands.
The increase in homes that go to the tourist market is palpable and one of the reasons that dynamite the housing crisis suffered by the island, but no contingency measure has yet been carried out to stop its advance.
Despite the proposals of the experts, the Canarian Government, presided over by Fernando Clavijo (CC) in alliance with the Popular Party, rejects implementing a moratorium for new registrations pending the approval of the future law that will regulate its use and leaves its control on the roof of the town councils. For the moment, no consistory on the island has put a stop to this type of housing.
Lanzarote and La Graciosa currently have 108,914 tourist places. Of these, 40% are vacation rentals, specifically, 44,234 places, according to Tourism data. To this are added those offered in hotels and apartments, which in January 2025 were 64,680, according to the Tourist Accommodation Survey of the Canary Islands Institute of Statistics (ISTAC).
The Island Plan of Ordination of Lanzarote, in force today and dated in 1991, set a maximum ceiling of 111,858 tourist places, eliminating 335,264 places compared to the Island Plan of 1973 and offered tools to contain growth. However, it did not contemplate the rise of vacation homes that, together with hotel and extra-hotel growth, have skyrocketed the number of places for tourists.
