The lack of housing and job insecurity are the main concerns of the people of the Canary Islands, according to a survey carried out by the Social Information, Assessment and Guidance Service (SIVO) of the Ports of Tenerife on social networks.
The survey, carried out among the more than 700,000 followers managed by SIVO on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and LinkedIn, has collected 16,473 responses.
31% of those surveyed, which is equivalent to 4,905 votes, indicated the lack of housing as their main concern. "This underlines the growing anxiety about access to adequate housing in an archipelago where tourist pressure and real estate market prices have complicated the situation for many residents," explains SIVO.
Job insecurity ranked second in concerns with 24% of the votes, totaling 3,721. This problem reflects the economic difficulties that continue to affect the workforce in a territory where tourism is an economic pillar, but also a source of often unstable and seasonally dependent jobs.
The impact of unsustainable tourism was the third most voted concern, with 12% and 1,992 votes, highlighting the concern for the balance between economic development and environmental conservation. The Canary Islands, a leading tourist destination, faces the challenge of managing its natural resources in a way that ensures its long-term viability.
Other prominent problems include the lack of social resources, with 11% of the votes, and political direction, which also received 11% of the preferences. Pollution on the beaches and the widespread perception that "everything is fine" closed the list of options, with 8% and less than 1% of the votes, respectively.
