The island brewery Nao Lanzarote won a gold and a bronze medal in the latest edition of the Barcelona Beer Challenge (BBC), a prestigious international competition in which a total of 1,126 beers made by 181 factories from 17 countries participated.
Nao competed in two of the 64 possible categories, and won awards in both categories. The gold medal, the first to reach the Canary Islands from the most prestigious beer competition in the country, to the best IPA with the beer Nao Mucho and the bronze medal with the variety Nao Marinera, Blonde Ale style.
“We are a Canarian craft brewery, proudly free and independent. We make special beers, with passion and a touch of madness, on a small and wonderful island that is very far from almost everything," said the factory director Miguel Lasso after receiving the award.
The master brewer was "proud of this recognition by a certified professional jury in the most important international competition in the country" and thanked the organization of the event for its "contribution to the dissemination of beer culture with participants representing the diversity of styles that make up the current world offer."
The BBC awards recognize, certify and disseminate the quality of beer that meets the highest standards. The international jury that integrates it, has specific training and qualifications so that the decisions are recognized both internationally. The methodology of the evaluations includes a dedication to each beer far superior to the average of other beer competitions in order to solidly contrast the opinion of the different judges.
Nao Beers, combining "novelty and roots"
The Cerveza NAO Lanzarote brand, which produces its artisanal elaborations in an old fishing net workshop from the late 19th century next to the Arrecife Puerto de Naos, was born in 2016 as a result of a dream: "to create a local beer that contributes to improving the culture and gastronomic offer on the island."
From its beginnings until today, they have developed eight varieties of beer, "the result of creative and artisanal processes in which we mix knowledge, personal experiences and influences from other places, to make some novel beers that are at the same time rooted in our territory," they explain from the company.
Its factory on Foque street in the capital of Lanzarote includes a bar El Camarote de Cervezas Nao where you can taste the award-winning beers.
