Lanzarote wine wins five awards at Agrocanarias 2026

Lanzarote presented 17 samples from nine different wineries on the island and obtained two grand gold medals and three gold medals

The wines of Lanzarote have obtained five awards within the framework of the Official Contest of Agrocanarias Wines, organized by the Canary Institute of Agri-food Quality (ICCA) on May 13 and 14 in El Hierro and May 19 in Tenerife.

This was announced by the counselor of the area, Narvay Quintero, and the director of the ICCA, Luis Arráez Guadalupe this Thursday, June 4. 251 productions from 65 wineries participated, 24 more than last year.

Bodegas Martinón obtained two grand gold medals for their Martinón Blanco in the category of still white wines; and Bodegas Timanfaya, thanks to their Timanfaya Malvasía Dulce Natural.

The Lanzarote wineries that achieved gold medals were Agrícola La Florida for their eponymous wine in the category of still white wines; Producciones Arráez Bravo for their Lágrima de Malvasía Volcánica in the category of still white wines and Bodegas Martinón for their Martinón Afrutado in the category of semi-sweet wines.

The wines that ex aequo obtained the award for Best Wine of the Canary Islands 2026 were Pico Cho Marcial Tinto and Flor de Chasna Blanco Naturalmente Dulce, produced by SAT Viticultores de la Comarca de Güímar under the Protected Designation of Origin (PDO Islas Canarias) and the Cooperative Society Cumbres de Abona (PDO Abona).

In total, 71 awards were granted in this call, including 33 Grand Gold Medals and 33 Gold Medals, in addition to five special distinctions: Best Wine of the Canary Islands, Best Organic Wine of the Canary Islands, Best Wine chosen by Winemakers, Best Image and Presentation, and Best Vermouth Production of the Canary Islands, the main novelty of this edition.

 

Ten Denominations of Origin participating

In this call, there was representation from ten of the eleven Protected Designations of Origin of the Archipelago: Islas Canarias, with 62 samples from thirteen companies; Abona, with 51 from six wineries; Tacoronte-Acentejo, with 35 wine-growing productions from eleven producers; La Palma, with 27 productions from eight wineries; Gran Canaria, with 24 products from five wineries; Lanzarote, with 17 samples from nine companies; El Hierro, with 12 wines from five companies; Valle de Güímar, with 10 samples from two wineries; Valle de La Orotava, with 7 products from three companies; and La Gomera, with 6 wines from three firms.

Regarding the distribution of awards, including medals and special distinctions, DOP Abona won twenty awards; DOP Islas Canarias, seventeen; DOP Valle de Güímar, eight; DOP La Palma, seven; DOP Tacoronte-Acentejo, six; DOP Lanzarote, five; DOP El Hierro, three; DOP Gran Canaria, two, and DOP Valle de La Orotava and DOP La Gomera closed the competition with one award-winning production each.

During the event, the regional counselor highlighted the high scores obtained by the participating productions, “all have achieved Gold or Grand Gold medals, which confirms the great quality of the wines we have in the Canary Islands”. “The wine sector is achieving more awards, a consequence of ever-improving quality, which is a source of pride for everyone,” he added.

In this same vein, he praised “the know-how and commitment of the participating winegrowers, winemakers, and winery owners who, through their productions, generate landscape, economy, and contribute to maintaining our traditions and culture linked to the rural environment, in addition to consolidating the Canary Islands brand as a benchmark of quality in the agri-food sector”. “This is reflected in this edition of Agrocanarias, in which productions that have also won awards in national and international competitions are recognized and in which twelve more awards have been given than last year.”
