Passion, technical knowledge and attachment to the land combine in the Cervezas Malpeis project, an artisan company that has managed to position itself as a benchmark for artisan beer in Lanzarote, identified as a success story and advised by the Chamber of Lanzarote through the Red CIDE promoted by the Canary Islands Agency for Research, Innovation and the Information Society (ACIISI).
Inspired by the volcanic landscape of the island - present both in its brand and in its products - they began making beer at home until they turned that hobby into a consolidated business activity. Today, Malpeis produces and distributes eleven artisan varieties, some of them alcohol-free or gluten-free, and has diversified its business model with its own restaurant service that pairs its beers with food based on local gastronomy.
With the support of the Red CIDE, they have managed to professionalize and scale their proposal. Through this innovation advisory instrument, they identified suitable financing lines, received specialized diagnoses, and participated in programs to improve competitiveness and industrial modernization. They have also developed an innovation agenda that allows them to continuously monitor their projects.
In this sense, the Minister of Universities, Science, Innovation and Culture, Migdalia Machín, highlighted that "Cervezas Malpeis is a good example of how innovation coexists with the roots and values of a community."
"From Tinajo, this small company has managed to consolidate a project that respects its environment, that is inspired by the landscape and that is committed to a sustainable model, based on the quality of the product and the authenticity of its process."
"Its journey," she added, "demonstrates that it is possible to grow without losing the essence, and that local initiatives can become benchmarks when talent, effort and adequate support are combined."
"From the Ministry of Universities, Science, Innovation and Culture we believe in useful innovation, anchored to the reality of the territory and with a direct impact on people's lives." For this reason, Machín explained, Red CIDE is promoted, which offers specialized technical advice to companies that want to improve, transform or consolidate. "The story of Malpeis is also a demonstration that public policies can be a real lever for the economic and social development of our islands," she stressed.
Its journey has been recognized by several institutions: special mention from the Cabildo de Lanzarote in the Isla de Lanzarote Awards 2018, packaging design award in the Anuaria España 2023, and public award in the Tinajo Bocata Tour thanks to its popular El Costillote burger.
The founders, Tania Delgado Cabrera and Orlando Niz Andueza, state: "We recommend that any entrepreneur contact Red CIDE. It can be a key tool to innovate, consolidate or grow."
The Red CIDE is an initiative of the Ministry of Universities, Science, Innovation and Culture of the Government of the Canary Islands, promoted through the Canary Islands Agency for Research, Innovation and the Information Society (ACIISI), and co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund, with a co-financing rate of 85% within the framework of the ERDF Operational Program Canary Islands 2021-2027.
Like Malpeis, the entire Canary Islands business network has the services of the Red CIDE at its disposal. To provide these services, the CUCIC has CIDE centers throughout the islands, coordinated by the Technological Institute of the Canary Islands and which have a technical team specialized in advising on R&D&I projects full time available to companies in their environment.
