Within the framework of the International Gastronomy Congress Madrid Fusión, the mixologist David Hidalgo, from the Lanzarote association of the guild, has been in charge of preparing cocktails with Lanzarote flavor.
In an interview on Radio Lanzarote, Hidalgo highlights the success of Lanzarote's liquid gastronomy in Madrid and advances details about the upcoming National Cocktail Championship that will be held on the island at the end of the year.
- How did the idea of holding the national championship on the island come about?
Lanzarote already held a national championship in 2002 and after 20 years you can apply again. It was our turn in 2022 and we had to postpone it due to covid.
Finally we are going to organize it this year, thanks to the effort of all the associated bartenders of Lanzarote and the support of the association at the national level.
- Do you think liquid gastronomy is gaining prominence?
In Spain we have the largest number of bars in the world per inhabitant and, for several consecutive years, Spanish bars have been chosen as the best in the world.
Many of the great bartenders or mixologists come to Spain for the diversity of products we have and the magic that can be created with them.
- How is the championship organized and when is it held?
It will be the first week of December. In the championship you will find different modalities. Classic cocktails that can be preparing an aperitif, a gin and tonic or a tiki cocktail, very related to tropical cocktails, but we also want to give special value to acrobatic cocktails.
- I imagine there will be prominence for local products...
Of course. In fact, there will be cocktails made with wine and liqueurs from the island. We have some spectacular products.
In Madrid Fusión I have been in charge of the cocktails and people have been amazed by the Lanzarote product.
