The Ancestral Blanco Ecológico wine from the Lanzarote winery El Grifo has been awarded the gold medal at the XIV Edition of the Ecovino 2023 Awards, recently held in La Rioja

More than 300 references from around 100 wineries and 30 different wine regions have participated in Ecovino.

El Grifo has participated for the first time in a competition of certified organic wines, in which the Finca Ramón Tinto, Blanco Seco and Ancestral Blanco Malvasía references were presented, all of them 100% organic wines.

Ancestral Blanco Ecológico is a sparkling wine made with Volcanic Malvasía using the Ancestral Method (Pet-Nat), in a single fermentation, not in two successive ones as in the Traditional or Champenois Method.

Only a thousand bottles are produced per year

The grape comes from a single plot in the northwest of the island of Lanzarote, of approximately 1 hectare and with a total of around 300 plants, which allows us to produce just over a thousand bottles.

For its elaboration, the grape is cut after the harvest and the next day the whole bunch is pressed without destemming to minimize the tannic extraction. After a brief racking, the must begins to ferment in a small tank with native yeasts.

After the tumultuous fermentation, when the sugar decreases to 16 grams of sugar per liter, the must is introduced into bottles and they are corked so that the residual fermentation generates the carbonic bubbles.

The winery defines this wine as "slightly cloudy, straw yellow, with light golden tones and a very fine and well-integrated bubble, presenting an elegant and persistent rosary of bubbles".
