The General Director of Labor of the Government of the Canary Islands, José Ramón Rodríguez, stressed that at the level of the Canary Islands “accident figures are much lower in incidence compared to those of four years ago. This index, which measures the number of workplace accidents per 100,000 workers, is below 2019, falling from 2,878 to 2,713 cases.”

However, in the specific case of Lanzarote, workplace accidents have increased by 12.7% since 2019, from 2,095 that year to 2,402 cases in 2024 (in this case, the data is the total, not divided by every 100,000 inhabitants).

The director of the Canary Islands Institute for Occupational Safety (ICASEL), Elirerto Galván, assured that in the Canary Islands “last year - between January and December - 24,723 workplace accidents with sick leave were registered, 0.93% less than in 2023, which is equivalent to 223 fewer accidents in absolute numbers. Of these, 24,577 were minor, 130 serious cases and 16 fatal.

As for  in itinere accidents (those that occur when going to or returning from work), they totaled 3,791. There were 3,756 minor, 34 serious, and one fatality. In the case of work accidents without sick leave, there were 25,077, a decrease of 1.5% compared to 2023.

By sectors of activity (during the work day), the incidence rate decreased in all of them. The largest decrease occurred in the agriculture and fishing sector (-12.38%), followed by construction (-10.17%), industry (-3.01%) and services (-2.63%).

More than 600 visits have been made to companies during 2024 to verify prevention conditions.
