The unemployment rate in Lanzarote fell to 20.21% in the first quarter of 2022, a figure not seen for two years, but far from positive, according to a report from the Lanzarote Data Center's Active Population Survey (EPA).

Despite improving its data compared to previous months and being the second island with the lowest unemployment in the Canary Islands, only behind Fuerteventura, with 18.93%, Lanzarote's unemployment rate is still very high compared to the rest of the country. Currently, the national average stands at 13.65%, six and a half points less than on the Island.

However, this is not a situation that exclusively affects Lanzarote, since the Canary Islands is the autonomous community with the highest number of unemployed in Spain (with the exception of Ceuta and Melilla), with 234,600 unemployed, 15,500 more than at the end of 2021, which represents 20.3% of its active population.

The unemployment rate has risen by 7% in the Canary Islands in the first quarter, destroying 16,700 net jobs compared to the data from the end of 2021. This is the first rise in unemployment in more than a year and a half, although it should be noted that in the last quarter of last year there was a sharp decrease, going from 23% in the third quarter to 18% in the fourth.

However, in year-on-year terms, the EPA indicates that the archipelago has 38,100 fewer unemployed than a year ago (13.97% less) and 121,200 more jobs (15.14% more).
