However, the people from the Canary Islands must face much higher prices for one of the biggest expenses for families, housing. Renting an 80 square meter apartment costs on average 1,120 euros per month in the archipelago, while in Extremadura the same apartment entails a monthly payment of 520 euros.

According to the annual salary structure survey published this Thursday by the National Institute of Statistics (INE), the average earnings of men grew by 3.5% in 2022 to 29,381.84 euros, while that of women increased by 5.1% to 24,359.82 euros.

The average annual female salary was, therefore, 82.9% of the male salary, a salary gap in which labor variables such as the type of contract, the greater weight of part-time work, the occupation or seniority influence.

Thus, 24.2% of women had an annual salary less than or equal to the Minimum Interprofessional Salary (SMI) in 2022, compared to 10.3% of men.
