This July there were 5,708 women in Lanzarote registered with the public employment services looking for work, while in the same month of 2019 there were 6,409. That is, 10% fewer women registered as unemployed. However, the data is not as positive as it might seem, since the number of women looking for employment is decreasing more slowly than that of men in the same situation. If in July 2019 there were 4,671 unemployed men in Lanzarote, currently there are 3,994, 14.5% less.
In fact, the gender gap is increasing compared to 2019. Of the total number of people registered in Lanzarote with the public employment services in July 2019, 57.8% were women, while in July of this year women reached 58.8% of the total job seekers. And the figure was even worse in the month of June, since hirings among women increased in July.
Decreases by municipalities
The economic reactivation in Lanzarote seems to have been more noticeable in female employment in Yaiza, where there are currently 21% fewer women seeking work compared to July 2019. Also in Arrecife there is a notable decrease in the number of women registered looking for employment, 14% less than in July 2019.
The reduction in the number of women registered with the public employment services in Tinajo in the same period has been 9%, while San Bartolomé and Teguise experience reductions of 7%. In Haría and Tías is where it has reduced the least compared to pre-pandemic levels, with 5 and 4% respectively.
