Employment grew in the Canary Islands by 400 people during the first quarter of 2025, according to data from the Labour Force Survey for that period released this Monday by the INE.

However, the period ended with a 15.78% increase in the total number of unemployed due to the large increase in people who have joined the search for a job (22,200 more).

At the end of March, the Canary Islands had 1,024,100 employed, 0.04% more than in the previous quarter and 2.80% more than those counted in the same period of 2024, which translates into 27,900 more than a year ago.

The number of unemployed counted between January and March of this year in the Canary Islands amounted, according to this EPA, to 160,200 people, 21,800 more and 15.78% more than in the previous quarter and 14,000 less, that is, -8.02% than those corresponding to the same quarter of 2024.

The increase in unemployment in the islands in the first quarter of 2025 was due to the increase in the active population in the autonomous community, which was 22,200 people (+1.91%) compared to December and 13,900 compared to March 2024 (+1.19%).

All in all, the archipelago ended the first quarter of this year with an unemployment rate of 13.53% of the active population, estimated at 1,184,300 people, 22,200 and 1.91% more than those counted in the previous quarter and 13,900 and 1.19% than the first of 2024.

The activity rate of the Canary Islands was 60.07% at the end of last March.
