The number of occupational accidents registered in the Canary Islands in the first five months of 2024 has been 10,450, of which 10,394 were minor, 49 serious and seven fatal, the Minister of Tourism and Employment, Jessica de León, reported in a parliamentary committee in response to the deputy of CC Francisco Linares.

Of the seven fatal accidents, five were due to myocardial infarction, one due to crushing and one due to a traffic accident, the minister detailed.

By sectors, the services sector is the one that concentrates the most accidents, 75.4% of the total.

25% of occupational accidents are related to overexertion and ergonomic and psychosocial factors.

The incidence rate has decreased by 29.3% percent in relation to the same period of 2023.

Faced with this situation, the Canarian Institute for Occupational Health (Icasel) and the Labor Inspectorate carry out various action programs, explained De León, such as the program for monitoring companies with the highest accident rate, the program for monitoring the risk of falls from heights and the monitoring program in construction sites.

There are also agreements with employers and unions for monitoring the works, a monitoring program in companies with a high rate of overexertion, a program of incidence in three-star hotels and apartments, an awareness and road safety campaign for 'in itinere' accidents and a program to improve the identification of occupational diseases.
