Employment in the construction sector in Canary Islands had not experienced such a positive year-end closing since 2009 as the one that occurred in 2022, according to the Sectoral Construction Bulletin prepared by the Chamber of Commerce of Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

At the end of 2022, the islands had 17,041 unemployed in the construction sector, which represents a decrease of 3,323 compared to December 2021 (-16.3%).

The aforementioned Chamber has indicated that the difficult economic situation of 2022, visible mainly due to the scarcity of supplies and raw materials and a generalized increase in prices, did not prevent the sector from registering good growth data.

From December 2019 to December 2022, construction has added 5,122 members (10%), not only being one of the most dynamic sectors in job creation, but even surpassing the hotel industry, whose growth has been 4,959 employed (3.3%) in the same period.

It also highlights how the construction sector has been able to maintain this growth constantly since 2014 with the exception of the worst months of the pandemic, a situation from which, moreover, it recovered quickly, adds the Chamber of Commerce.

Of the total number of companies surveyed, 81% indicated that they had maintained or improved their activity in the fourth quarter of 2022 compared to the third.

And it points out that the official bidding budget indicator reveals the behavior of the sector in the future, having increased from January to December 2022 by 25.5% compared to the year 2021, more due to the growth of civil engineering works (40.7%) than building works (8.2%).
