Ángel Víctor Torres, president of the Canary Islands, stated this Saturday that, unless he is mistaken, which he believes he is not, there will be good news that the number of unemployed in the islands will fall below 200,000.
During a visit to Puerto de la Cruz, the president highlighted that the employers maintain the growth forecast for the islands, and, according to data from the Active Population Survey (EPA), in the archipelago were created in a year 120,000 jobs, twice as many as the Community of Madrid.
In addition, he pointed out that the Canary Islands is "one of the autonomous communities that create the most employment", although he insisted that caution and precaution should be taken due to what inflation and the increase in the price of raw materials mean.
He also highlighted the importance of the direct aid that the central and regional governments give to farmers and ranchers and to the purchase of fuels, which will be "maintained as long as" the situation lasts.
He is convinced that 2022 will be the year "of recovery", and insisted that carrying out a general tax cut now would not mean a drop in prices, since there is little supply of oil and gas. However, it should be noted that the Canarian government has lowered taxes, postponed the payment of the IGIC during the months of the pandemic and has allocated direct aid and reduced the IGIC for the purchase of sanitary material.
The president stated that at present the Canary Islands economy is "recovered", the jobs have been recovered, which went to ERTE and not to ERE, and stressed that "never before have there been more people working, nor so much indefinite employment", something that is "good" for social justice.
He has also referred to the fight against climate change, and stated that the fight against this phenomenon is a priority, so that in the first Governing Council the climate emergency was declared and next week it is planned that the Canarian bill on climate change will be debated in a presentation.
