The number of long-term unemployed people registered in the offices of the public employment services in the Canary Islands decreased last October by 988 people and the global figure for this group - more than a year without entering the labor market - currently stands at 73,045 people.

In year-on-year terms, if we compare it with the same period of the previous year, the data shows a decrease of 7.04% (-5,531).

The Deputy Minister of Employment of the Government of the Canary Islands, Isabel León, has highlighted that "this is a priority group within our employment policies." Although the autonomous community registered an increase in unemployment of 0.52% in October, which means 828 more people compared to September, the Deputy Minister pointed out that "70% of this increase, 578 people, belong to the category of no previous employment, that is, unemployed people who have not worked previously and who have joined the search for employment for the first time."

In fact, the largest increase in unemployment is recorded in those under 25 years of age (+10.85%), since "they are young people who are looking for a first opportunity and register for the first time as applicants in the Canarian Employment Service, since the expectation of finding a job grows." Regarding the group between 25 and 45 years of age, unemployment increases by 0.81%, while it decreases in the group of over 45 years of age (-0.53%).

In the last twelve months, however, unemployment was reduced in the islands by 13,676 people, which represents a decrease of 7.90%.

Isabel León also pointed out that "although this increase is usual in October, the Canary Islands has 159,498 people without work, which puts us in figures from sixteen years ago."

In terms of gender, unemployment increased last month by 0.11% (101) in women and 1.08% (727) in men. Compared to October 2023, it decreased by -7.99% (-7,939) in the female group and -7.77% (-5,733) in the male group.

Monthly unemployment decreased in agriculture (-1.81%); in construction (-0.77%) and in the rest of the services (-0.53%), while it increased in the hotel industry (1.32%); industry (0.88%) and commerce (1.71%).

In the last year, unemployment decreased in all economic sectors, highlighting in percentage terms agriculture with 945 fewer unemployed people (-26.28%).

For his part, the Director General of Labor, José Ramón Rodríguez, indicated that "last month a total of 72,218 contracts were signed in the Canary Islands, so 9,440 new employment contracts were formalized (15.04%) compared to September." In year-on-year terms, there were 8,652 more contracts, 13.61%. "43.29%, that is, 31,265 are indefinite," Rodríguez pointed out.

In addition, he pointed out that "employment remains stable, despite the usual negative seasonal incidence typical of the month of October."
