Almost 14,000 work accidents between January and June in the Canary Islands

The highest accident rate occurred in the hospitality sector, followed by construction, commerce and vehicle repair

The Canary Islands registered 13,978 work accidents with sick leave from January to June, of which 13,718 were minor, 70 serious and 10 fatal.

These figures exceed those of the same period last year, when 13,679 work accidents were recorded: 13,581 minor, 90 serious and 8 fatal, according to figures handled by the Canary Islands Institute of Statistics.

Of all these work accidents in the first semester of 2024, 11,939 occurred during the workday and 1,859 while going to or returning from it.

In the disaggregated analysis by sectors, a higher accident rate is observed in the hospitality sector (2,952), ahead of construction (1,645), which presents the highest incidence rate (460.45); commerce and repair of vehicles (1,554) and administrative activities and auxiliary services (1,100).

The province of Las Palmas presents a higher accident rate, with 7,450 accidents with sick leave, compared to 6,348 in the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

The proportion between salaried and self-employed workers is 13,361 for the former compared to 437 for the latter.
