New Audi A2 e-tron: the 100% electric compact that redefines premium efficiency

The German firm Audi continues to take steps towards its goal of consolidating itself in the electric market without renouncing its essence.

The company is preparing the launch of a new electric compact that will become the entry-level model in its premium electric range. The Audi A2 e-tron will have its world premiere in autumn 2026 and will be manufactured at the Ingolstadt plant, reviving the spirit of the original Audi A2, a model that more than 25 years ago already championed efficiency.

The New Audi A2 e-tron now represents that same philosophy adapted to the electric era. Its development aims to combine compact dimensions, advanced technology, and reduced energy consumption to offer a high-quality alternative designed for daily commutes.

 

The most efficient Audi in history

One of the main selling points of the new A2 e-tron is its efficiency. Audi is targeting a preliminary homologated consumption of only 12.8 kWh per 100 kilometers, a figure that would position it as the most efficient model developed by the brand to date. The model will also offer more than 600 kilometers of WLTP range.

Engineers have worked on different areas of the vehicle to achieve these results. Aerodynamics plays an essential role, with a Cx coefficient of 0.24, while the active cooling air intake reduces losses when high cooling capacity is not required. In addition, there is electronics based on silicon carbide semiconductors and a transmission optimized to make the most of every kilowatt.

 

LFP battery and bidirectional charging

Efficiency also extends to the storage system. The Audi A2 e-tron incorporates a 61 kWh LFP battery with cell-to-pack technology. This configuration allows the cells to be integrated directly into the battery pack, eliminating intermediate modules and optimizing space. 

This type of battery also stands out for its durability and safety. The system achieves a charging efficiency of 89.6% via a wallbox in alternating current and thanks to an optimized cooling strategy. It also adds bidirectional charging functions.

With Vehicle-to-Load and Vehicle-to-Home technologies, the car can use its battery to power electrical devices or even supply energy to a home. To use Vehicle-to-Home, a charging system recommended by Audi is required, and initially, this function will be available in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. In this way, the A2 e-tron is not only conceived as a means of transport but is part of a much more flexible energy ecosystem.

 

Subjected to extreme tests

Before reaching production, the electric compact is undergoing a demanding validation program. Prototypes have been subjected to extreme cold tests in Lapland (Sweden) to check their behavior in particularly severe winter conditions.

Aerodynamics have also been tested in the wind tunnel, with tests at speeds of up to 300 km/h. Engineers, for their part, have carried out driving tests on the roads of the Altmühl valley, near Ingolstadt, to evaluate the vehicle's behavior in real-world usage situations.

With this approach, the new Audi A2 e-tron aims to reclaim a historic designation from a completely current perspective. The vision expressed by Audi CEO Gernot Döllner is to facilitate access to premium electric mobility that is efficient, safe, and practical for everyday use. Its arrival in 2026 will thus mark a new chapter for the brand's electric compacts.
