When does the single transport bonus arrive for all the Canary Islands?

The Minister of Public Works, Housing and Mobility of the Government of the Canary Islands, Pablo Rodríguez, announced this Tuesday that the single transport voucher that will allow the use of the same ticket on all islands will begin to operate in December with a pilot project initially aimed at the most frequent users.

During a question from the PSOE in the plenary session of the Parliament of the Canary Islands, Rodríguez explained that the Executive plans to extend the system to all users on the seven islands throughout 2027, once the operation of this first phase has been verified.

The minister recalled that the Canary Resident Voucher was created in 2018 with the aim of unifying the different transport tickets existing in the archipelago and that a second phase contemplated its use on all islands, although, as he said, that development was not promoted during the previous legislature due to the complexity it presented at a technological level.

Rodríguez pointed out that the Government has commissioned the Technological Institute of the Canary Islands (ITC) to develop the necessary technological platform and has allocated more than one million euros to the island councils to adapt and standardize their validation systems, since until now not all of them use the same technology.

The socialist deputy Marcos Bergaz had requested a date for the launch of the voucher compatible on all islands during his turn and, after learning of the announcement, said that his group will be "on the lookout" for the correct functioning of the measure.

Bergaz defended that the measure would facilitate inter-island mobility for students and other regular users of public transport and would contribute to continuing to promote the use of buses in the archipelago.

In his closing remarks, Rodríguez argued that both this measure and the free public transport have contributed to increasing the number of users, although he warned that the Government of Spain does not yet finance the full real cost of this gratuity and that the island councils are advancing part of these resources.
