The Princesa Yaiza hotel is once again the scene of a labor dispute that has led the Las Kellys association, the Unión Sindical Obrera, and Sindicalistas de Canarias to call a new gathering at the doors of the establishment next Friday, to demand the relocation of more than 20 workers who have been left "on the street".
According to them, these employees depended on a subcontractor, Securitas, but that contract has been terminated without giving solutions or answers to the affected workers. "We don't know who broke it. They blame each other," says the president of Las Kellys, Miriam Barros, who adds that what the subcontracted company alleges is that Princesa Yaiza "owes them money for more than a year".
The same explanation has been given by the president of the Works Committee and member of Comisiones Obreras, Pedro Aparicio, who maintains that it was the subcontractor who decided to stop providing the service due to non-payments by the company owned by Juan Francisco Rosa. "Securitas religiously paid the workers but, apparently, the hotel was not paying the subcontractor", he adds, pointing out that that is why they decided to stop providing the service, which included both security personnel and pool attendants and maids who cleaned the common areas.
"We recommended that they call the Civil Guard to draw up a report"
According to the president of the Works Committee, the situation exploded early Monday morning, when these workers were not allowed to access their jobs. "We recommended that they report it to the Labor Inspectorate and call the Civil Guard, so that they could record that they had gone to work", he explained. At that time, although he specifies that these workers have their own Works Committee, he also requested information from the property, as they are people who work in the hotel. However, more than 24 hours later, he complains that he has not received a response. "Everything is silence", he questioned on Tuesday morning.
For her part, the president of Las Kellys affirms that this Monday there was already a meeting with the management of Princesa Yaiza, in which all they conveyed to the affected workers is "that they talk to Securitas" and that "they don't want them there". However, after calling the gathering at the doors of the hotel, this Tuesday they received a new call from the director, summoning them to a meeting for this afternoon.
What these workers are demanding is to be subrogated by the new company that assumes the service or to be relocated by the hotel itself. "More than 20 workers thrown into the street due to the incompetence and arbitrariness of the Princesa Yaiza and Securitas S.A. hotel! Enough of business abuse!", they point out in the poster with which they announce the gathering, scheduled for next Friday at 6:00 p.m.
However, with the new meeting to which the workers have been summoned, the company could try to prevent that mobilization from taking place at the doors of its hotel, as it has already achieved on previous occasions. This same summer, CCOO had called gatherings and even threatened to go on strike if delays in the payment of payroll to the staff continued, but at the last minute they got a commitment from the property that payments would be regularized. Therefore, they suspended the protest measures while that promise is fulfilled.
