Some businesses in Lanzarote have already started the discount period associated with 'Black Friday', which this year is specifically November 29th, although many promotions are already available.
“Black Friday, which started as one day, has become a period of up to two weeks for some businesses before and even after the date”, explains to Ekonomus Daniel González, general secretary of the Interinsular Federation of Small and Medium Enterprises (Felapyme) and spokesperson for Arrecife Centro.
“Many people take advantage of discounts of between 10% and 50% on Black Friday, on the price of the product to advance Christmas shopping”, explains González, which makes the sales of these days equivalent to “between 10% and 20%” of all annual operations of businesses in Lanzarote.
“All types of commercial businesses such as shoe stores, clothing, accessories, toy stores, watch stores... practically 100%, especially in the center of Arrecife”, join this discount period, although electronics and appliances are still the star products of this period, according to the spokesperson for Arrecife Centro.
Black Friday is celebrated the day after the American holiday of Thanksgiving, which is the fourth Thursday of November, so it is usually the last Friday of the month, but not necessarily.
The concept of Black Friday was first associated with work absenteeism that occurred the day after Thanksgiving. Later, the Philadelphia police used the term to refer to the traffic jams that occurred on the city's roads when many people traveled by car to shop.
