The V Livestock, Agriculture and Fishing Fair of Teguise hosted this Saturday the awards ceremony for the V Lanzarote Island Cheese Competition “Empleita de Oro”, one of the most outstanding events of the fair's program, which once again highlighted the quality, tradition, and excellence of the island's cheese dairies.
The competition brought together a panel of expert tasters tasked with evaluating the different samples presented in the categories of fresh, semi-soft, semi-hard, and hard cheeses, made from both raw and pasteurized milk, consolidating itself as one of the main showcases for the promotion of local products and the island's livestock sector.
This competition is financed by the Canary Institute of Agri-food Quality (ICCA) with the aim of recognizing the excellence of cheese productions, promoting the consumption of local products, and supporting the work carried out by the island's cheese dairies.
The Empleita de Oro 2026 for the Best Cheese of Lanzarote went to Quesería El Faro, thanks to its cured pasteurized milk cheese, which obtained the highest score from the jury.
The mayor of Teguise, Olivia Duque, and the president of the Cabildo de Lanzarote, Oswaldo Betancort, jointly congratulated all participating cheese dairies and highlighted the importance of continuing to support the island's primary sector.
For his part, the president of the Federation of Agricultural, Livestock and Fishing Associations of Lanzarote (FASAT), Omar Viña, highlighted the high level of the preparations presented in this fifth edition.
In the category of fresh raw milk cheeses, the first prize went to Quesería Abuelo Machín, while Quesería Soo obtained the second award. In fresh pasteurized milk cheeses, Quesería El Faro won first prize with its preparation “El Farito Fresco Ahumado”, in addition to achieving the second prize in the category.
In the section for semi-soft raw milk cheeses, Quesería La Vega de Machín obtained the first prize and Quesería Rubicón the second, thanks to its cheese “Tierno Ahumado”. For its part, in the category of semi-soft pasteurized milk cheeses, Quesería El Faro once again prevailed with “El Farito Tierno Ahumado”, also achieving the second prize.
Within the category of semi-cured raw milk cheeses, Quesería Filo El Cuchillo won first prize, followed by Quesería Abuelo Machín. In semi-cured pasteurized milk cheeses, Quesería Finca de Uga was recognized with first prize for its cheese “El Secreto del Majo” and also obtained the second award with its cheese “Rojillo al Pimentón”.
In the category of cured raw milk cheeses, Quesería Filo El Cuchillo received first prize and Quesería Flor de Luz the second. Finally, in cured pasteurized milk cheeses, Quesería El Faro obtained first prize and Quesería Finca de Uga the second with its cheese “Bodega”.
Likewise, the jury awarded the prize for Best Image and Presentation to Quesería Rubicón, for the labeling of its semi-cured paprika cheese.
In addition, the organization reminds that the fair will continue this Sunday with an intense day of activities aimed at all audiences, which will include exhibitions, tastings, workshops, horse racing, local product samples, and different proposals to continue bringing the primary sector closer to citizens.
