The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Food Sovereignty of the Government of the Canary Islands has just published a call for aid to replace the main engine or the construction of new fishing vessels, less than 12 meters in length, for a total amount of 500,000 euros.

This amount is distributed in 400,000 euros aimed at covering both the direct costs of construction of new fishing vessels and those related to professional fees for drafting and signing the project, as well as the direction of the work.

This line of aid can reach a maximum intensity of 85% up to a limit amount of 40,000 euros per beneficiary.

Likewise, 100,000 euros are allocated to cover the replacement of main engines of equal or greater power and energy efficiency than those previously installed, as well as the indirect costs derived, including technical advice for the selection of the new engine.

In this case, a maximum of 25,000 euros is established, with coverage of up to 85% of the total eligible costs.

In this sense, the Minister of the area, Narvay Quintero, stressed that "the amount of this aid may be increased if necessary" so that its adjustment will depend on the applications received at the close of the call. According to the head of the department, "this line seeks to modernize the Canarian fishing fleet, which is very old, and make it more efficient and sustainable."

In order to qualify for these funds, the vessels must have a total length of less than 12 meters and a home port in the Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands, in addition to complying with labor and maritime safety regulations.

Also, in the case of the aid line for the replacement of the main engine, the vessels must have carried out fishing activities for a minimum of 60 days in each of the two calendar years prior to the year of submission of the application.

Applicants must submit their applications until February 3, 2025 through the model available on the electronic headquarters of the Government of the Canary Islands, both for aid aimed at the construction of new fishing vessels and for the replacement of the main engine.
