The first Entrepreneurship and Small and Medium Enterprise Observatory (Oepyme) of the Canary Islands arises as an information instrument to group studies in the area and promote activity in the archipelago, as explained this Friday by the Minister of Economy, Elena Máñez, the rector of the University of Las Palmas, Lluís Serra, and the vice-rector of Research and Transfer of the University of La Laguna, Ernesto Pereda.
“The transfer of knowledge from universities to the entire population is key to accelerating our progress as a society and, therefore, we do not hesitate to finance the launch of this Observatory from the Canarian Employment Service, which will facilitate research, business decision-making and the adaptation of public policies to the needs of the community in a matter as sensitive as entrepreneurship”, Elena Máñez highlighted during an event with the participation of the technical director of the Observatory, Rosa Batista, and the presence of both the Deputy Minister of Employment, Gustavo Santana, and the director of the SCE, Dunnia Rodríguez.
Precisely, “thanks to academic studies we know, for example, that the propensity to undertake of our population increased in the first half of 2021, so the application in the Canary Islands of more than 1,200 million euros to compensate for the losses recorded as a result of the pandemic was a success since it allowed the subsistence of many of the entrepreneurial initiatives in the Islands until the recovery of the economy”, argued the counselor in reference to the “proactive strategy with public spending and sectoral intervention” of the continental, state and regional administrations.
The Observatory of Entrepreneurship and SMEs of the Canary Islands integrates the three economic research projects of public universities in various networks of global scope: Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM), Global University Entrepreneurial Spirit Students’ Survey (Guesss) and Foundation for Strategic Analysis and Development of Small and Medium Enterprises (Faedpyme).
