The Cabildo of Lanzarote, under the presidency of Oswaldo Betancort, has officially created the Hospitality Area, a new island department that was created with the aim of boosting the hotel industry and enhancing the gastronomic and tourist offer of Lanzarote and La Graciosa.
The measure has been published in the Bulletin Oficial de la Provincia de Las Palmas, is a firm step by the current Government group to strengthen one of the strategic sectors of the island's economy.
The Hospitality Area, which is integrated into Commerce, "is not the result of improvisation", explain from the Cabildo, "but the direct consequence of a planning designed to respond to the demands of the sector".
Thus, there will also be a specific budget item to support the hotel industry, as well as the development of training projects aimed at professionals in the sector and their workers, in order to raise the quality of service and the competitiveness of local companies.
The president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Oswaldo Betancort, stressed that the creation of the Hospitality Area reflects "our clear commitment to a key sector for the economy and cultural identity of Lanzarote and La Graciosa. We are committed to a strong, qualified and sustainable hotel industry, which not only generates employment, but also enriches the experience of our population and those who visit us.”
Design of specific policies
For his part, the CEO of the Area, Armando Santana, stressed the importance of providing the island's hotel industry with its own structure within the administration: "With this new Area, we are responding to a historical demand of the sector. We will have more capacity to design specific policies, offer quality training and allocate resources to help modernize and strengthen the hotel industry, one of the most dynamic economic engines of our island.”
The Decree creating the Area, approved on August 28 and published in the Boletín Oficial de la Provincia de Las Palmas, establishes the new name of the department as the Insular Area of Open Government (Citizen Participation and Transparency), Animal Welfare, Commerce (Hospitality) and Consumption.
With this initiative, the Cabildo of Lanzarote places the hotel industry in the place it deserves within the island's strategic policies.
