The trade union Comisiones Obreras (CCOO) has reported that the workers of interurban transport of Lanzarote, Fuerteventura and Gran Canaria will go on strike in view of the “null progress in the negotiations” that have been carried out since the beginning of the year to approve a provincial agreement that improves and equalizes the conditions of the sector and that until now does not exist.

“The employers have blocked the negotiation”, explains Ricardo Hernández, trade union delegate of Comisiones Obreras in Intercity Bus Lanzarote.

In Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, the strike will begin on September 15 and 16 and will continue on successive days with intermittent stoppages from 06:00 to 10:00 hours and from 17:00 to 21:00 hours, until the resolution of the conflict.

In Gran Canaria, the strike will begin on September 17 and 18, 2025, respectively, and will continue on successive days with intermittent stoppages at the same times as in Lanzarote and Fuerteventura.

The workers of the interurban transport of the province demand a sector agreement that “maintains its validity until 2032” and that “guarantees the subrogation of the personnel in the event that there is transmission of contracts or concessions”.

An issue of particular importance in Lanzarote, since the Cabildo is very close to publishing the new contract for this service for the next fifteen years.

They also ask that the reduction of working hours to 37.5 hours per week be included, given the possible modification of the Workers' Statute in this regard.

The common agreement would also guarantee the “salary convergence of all operators and avoid inequalities”.

Asked about the island in which the workers in the sector have better conditions at present, Hernández explains that “the drivers of Intercity Bus Lanzarote earn between 1,600 and 1,700 euros per month with the extraordinary prorated”, which results in “7,700 euros less per year than the workers in the same sector in Gran Canaria”.

The most unprotected are those of Lanzarote, those of Fuerteventura have better conditions but continue to charge below those of Gran Canaria”, adds Hernández.

Likewise, they request, to improve the work-life balance, that “the recent legal novelties in terms of permits and licenses be incorporated into the agreement, ensuring full adaptation to current legislation”, which the workers of Gran Canaria already enjoy.
