Sales of used cars and SUVs in the Canary Islands started 2025 negatively, with a total of 6,946 units, which is 1.3% less than in January last year, according to data from the MSI consultancy for the sector associations Ganvam (official and independent distributors) and Faconauto (dealerships).
Nationally, sales of used cars and SUVs started the year positively, with a total of 167,931 units, which is 5.3% more than in January last year, according to the same sources. Thus, last month 2.3 used vehicles were sold for each new vehicle.
Analyzing the sales channel, this increase is mainly due to the growth of operations with used vehicles from rental companies. Specifically, rent a car operators registered almost 34% more transactions than in January last year. This increase explains the rise in sales of used vehicles less than one year old, which closed January with an increase of 31%, reaching 17,234 units.
Despite the pull of nearly new vehicles, the bulk of operations continues to be concentrated in models over fifteen years old, which accounted for 39.7% of sales at the end of last month, representing a volume of 66,609 units, 3.2% more.
For the sector associations, the used car market must face a significant qualitative improvement. The average age of the used car sold in Spain in January was 11 years, but rose to 15 years in transactions between individuals, which account for six out of ten transactions.
These data highlight the need to launch an effective national management plan that contributes to the rejuvenation of the fleet and favors the access of all families to efficient mobility solutions, at a time when the average price of vehicles is moving away from average incomes.
Sales of used electrified vehicles grow, while used diesel vehicles show a negative sign
Regarding energy sources, operations with used diesel vehicles - which accounted for 50% of operations - reverse the trend and show a negative sign, with a decrease of 2.2% during the past month of January. Gasoline vehicles, on the other hand, increased by 5% in January, with a total of 62,201 units sold, representing 37% of the total market.
With respect to alternative propulsions, operations with pure electric used cars started the year with a significant increase of 55% compared to January last year, reaching 1,849 units sold, representing 1.1% of the total market. In their case, sales of used plug-in hybrids increased by 70%, accounting for a total of 3,079 units.
